About this programme
Social Enterprise EDGE is a dedicated award category inside the Scottish EDGE competition, Scotland's largest business funding competition, run by Scottish EDGE in partnership with the Postcode Innovation Trust (funded by players of the People's Postcode Lottery). It exists specifically for asset-locked social enterprises and charities, alongside the main Scottish EDGE category, Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE.
The award is up to £75,000, split 70% grant and 30% loan. Winners are assessed on the same six criteria as the main competition (Value Proposition, Team, Impact, Customer Focus, Business Growth and Utilisation of Funding) but with a stronger weighting on Social Purpose and Business Growth Sustainability, reflecting the category's focus on organisations tackling social and environmental problems in Scotland, nationally or abroad through a sustainable trading model rather than pure grant dependency.
Scottish EDGE runs in periodic rounds rather than as an always-open fund. Each round has a fixed application window, after which eligible entrants go through the same first-stage assessment, semi-final and final process as every other category, culminating in a live pitch final where Social Enterprise EDGE winners are announced.
How it works
Applicants enter Social Enterprise EDGE as their category choice when applying to a Scottish EDGE round — only one category (Scottish EDGE, Social Enterprise EDGE, Young EDGE or Wild Card EDGE) can be entered per round, so eligibility to the social-enterprise track is chosen up front, not assigned later.
Entries go through the standard Scottish EDGE 1st Stage Assessment, where an assessment panel of investors, entrepreneurs and industry experts scores the written application and 3-minute video pitch against the six assessment criteria.
Social enterprises that clear 1st Stage are invited to pitch live at the Social Enterprise EDGE Final, competing for the up-to-£75,000 award (70% grant / 30% loan).
The award is split rather than a single lump sum: 70% is non-repayable grant, 30% is a loan, which is why the eligibility rules exclude sole traders (a loan needs a company structure) from every category except Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE.
Who can apply
The Social Enterprise EDGE category is restricted to asset-locked Social Enterprises and Charities that meet three specific tests: (a) a social mission embedded in the organisation's articles, (b) a legal clause in the articles preventing company assets from being used for private gain, and (c) a constitutional requirement that profits be reinvested in the business or community. Organisations that are not asset-locked in this way are not considered for the category.
General Scottish EDGE eligibility also applies: the organisation must be incorporated at Companies House or OSCR, have been trading for less than 5 years (the founding date can be older, but active trading must have started within that window), and be headquartered in Scotland with at least 50% of key business leaders resident in Scotland.
Financially, current annual turnover must not exceed £1m and the organisation must not have received external investment of £500,000 or more. The organisation should be able to show potential for new/increased cumulative sales of £200,000 over the next 3 years and the capacity to create new, sustainable Scottish jobs.
Organisations in administration or liquidation are excluded, as are those whose leaders have been prosecuted for fraud or disqualified as a company director. Winners of a main Scottish EDGE award in a previous round cannot re-enter (Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE winners are the exception and may reapply). Non-UK passport holders among the leadership must provide evidence of the right to work/reside via visa documentation.
How to apply
- Apply during an open Scottish EDGE round via the online Scottish EDGE Application Portal (portal.scottishedge.com) — no paper-based or email applications are accepted. Applications open and close on fixed dates set per round; check the current round's dates on the official site before starting.
- Select Social Enterprise EDGE as the entry category when applying — only one category can be entered per round.
- Complete the written application form, covering Value Proposition, Entrepreneurial Spirit (team), Business Growth Potential, Customer Focus, Utilisation of Funding, and Impact (including social/economic benefit, job creation and UN Sustainable Development Goals alignment where relevant).
- Record and submit a 3-minute video pitch alongside the written application. Content beyond the 3-minute limit is not viewed by assessors; production quality only needs to match a handheld mobile recording — the substance of the pitch is what is scored.
- If shortlisted at 1st Stage, progress through the Semi-Final and then the Social Enterprise EDGE Final, where winners pitch live for the up-to-£75,000 award.
