Wild Card EDGE is one of the award categories inside Scottish EDGE, Scotland's biggest business funding competition. It is aimed specifically at pre-trading businesses - companies, sole traders and partnerships that have not yet taken their product or service to market - and it is a grant-only award, with no loan component.
Scottish EDGE is Scotland's biggest business funding competition, with founding partners the Hunter Foundation, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government. Since launch it has supported hundreds of businesses with grants and loans of £10,000 to £150,000, plus special award categories such as Wild Card EDGE.
Wild Card EDGE exists on the premise that early-stage businesses often need support specifically to get their first product or service to market, before they have trading history to point to. Assessment is deliberately judgement-based: the panel is looking for the applicant or company to have an innovative 'wow' factor, which the programme is explicit can come from the product or service itself, or from the applicant, their approach, their team, or their brand and design choices.
Wild Card EDGE is judged by the same panel and 1st Stage Assessment process as the main Scottish EDGE competition, but culminates in its own dedicated Wild Card EDGE Final rather than the main semi-final/final track. The category is sponsored by Ventures Lab.
How it works
All applicants, regardless of category, go through the same online application and a single 1st Stage Assessment process, scored against Scottish EDGE's standard assessment criteria.
Wild Card EDGE applicants who clear 1st Stage go directly to the Wild Card EDGE Final rather than a general semi-final - the category runs its own dedicated final event.
At the Wild Card EDGE Final, shortlisted applicants pitch live to the judging panel, who select the round's winners on the day. Scottish EDGE lists a first prize of £15,000 and a second prize of £10,000 for the category, both grant only.
The judges also identify a top Wild Card prize winner, who in addition to the grant is awarded a place at a future Scottish EDGE Semi-Final - a route into the main competition track for a business that was pre-trading when it won.
Winners also get access to a non-financial support package delivered by Scottish EDGE's partner professional-services firms (legal, accountancy and similar), on top of the cash grant.
Who can apply
Wild Card EDGE is specifically for pre-trading companies, sole traders and partnerships - it is one of only two categories (alongside Young EDGE) that sole traders can apply to, since the main Scottish EDGE award is restricted to limited companies.
General Scottish EDGE eligibility applies on top of the pre-trading requirement, including that the business be based in Scotland - check the current Round 28 eligibility criteria on the Scottish EDGE application portal for the full, precise conditions (registration, leadership residency, disqualifiers) before applying.
Unlike the main Scottish EDGE award, previous Wild Card EDGE winners are permitted to reapply to the Wild Card or Young EDGE categories in a later round.
How to apply
- Apply online only, through the Scottish EDGE Application Portal at portal.scottishedge.com - applications submitted by any other route are not accepted.
- Complete the written application form and record a short (around three-minute) video pitch; the video only needs to be filmed on a phone or similar to a reasonable standard, professional production is explicitly not required.
- A blank practice version of the application form can be downloaded from the Scottish EDGE site to draft answers offline before submitting through the portal.
- Submit before the round’s published closing date and time - Round 28 opened 5 August 2026 and closes 2 September 2026 at 2:00pm.
- If shortlisted at 1st Stage, applicants are invited to pitch live at the Wild Card EDGE Final, where the judging panel decides winners on the day - check the Scottish EDGE site for the confirmed Round 28 Final date once published.
