About this programme

The Proof of Concept program helps innovators test whether an idea is technically and economically feasible before they try to commercialize it. It provides up to $25,000 to fund the research needed to demonstrate that feasibility.

It is run by the South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) and is open to entrepreneurs, universities, existing South Dakota companies, and other entities committed to commercializing the results of the work in South Dakota.

How it works

Awards go up to $25,000, and applicants must provide a matching cash or in-kind contribution of at least 10% of project costs.

Funds can cover consultant contracts, materials and supplies, salaries for employees based in South Dakota, and other services needed for a technical feasibility or marketing study. Funds cannot be used for principal researcher salaries, legal fees for incorporation, sales expenses, or general operating costs.

Depending on how the project turns out, the investment may be forgiven, or repayment or investment terms will be put in place instead.
