About this programme
OwlSpark is an accelerator run by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship at Rice University, established in 2012. It runs two tracks in parallel: one for tech startups focused on high growth, and one for small businesses in any industry. It partners with the University of Houston and community organizations.
The program describes its goal as giving founders hands-on entrepreneurship experience and a roadmap from innovation to commercialization. Since 2013 it reports 104 ventures launched, 229 founders who have gone through the program, and $116 million raised by those founders.
How it works
OwlSpark runs as a full-time summer program. Participants are expected to work full time on their venture from May 15 to August 1, attend program sessions multiple times a week, and pitch at an August showcase at the end of the cohort.
Who can apply
A venture applying needs 1 to 3 founders, and at least one founder must be affiliated with Rice University, as a current student, staff, faculty member across any discipline, or an alumnus. International students are eligible if they have the required OISS authorization.
Only one application per venture is accepted, and it must be submitted by the Rice-affiliated founder.
How to apply
- Review the FAQs and application instructions before starting, since the application cannot be saved partway through.
- Submit one application per venture, filed by the Rice-affiliated founder, by the published deadline.
- If accepted, commit to full-time participation over the program dates, attend sessions multiple times weekly, and pitch at the final showcase.
