About this programme

The SBIR Matching Grant Program is run by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) to build on the federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and stimulate innovation and growth among the state's technology businesses, with the goal of creating and retaining high-tech jobs.

It works by matching a portion of a federal SBIR award a company has already won, rather than funding a project independently.

How it works

AEDC provides a discretionary matching grant of up to 50% of the company's federal SBIR award: up to $50,000 to match a Phase I award, or up to $100,000 to match a Phase II award.

The match is a reimbursable grant. The company submits invoices and financial reports to AEDC and is reimbursed against those, rather than receiving the funds upfront.

Who can apply

The applicant must have already received a federal SBIR award.

The company must be principally involved in one or more targeted business activities: advanced materials and manufacturing systems; agriculture, food, and environmental sciences; biotechnology, bioengineering, and life sciences; information technology; transportation logistics; or bio-based products.

Frequently asked

Do I need to already have an SBIR award to apply?

Yes. The program only matches a federal SBIR award you have already received; it does not fund a project on its own.

How much can the state match?

Up to 50% of your federal award, capped at $50,000 for a Phase I award or $100,000 for a Phase II award.

Is the grant paid up front?

No, it's reimbursable. You submit invoices and financial reports to AEDC and are reimbursed against them.

What kind of businesses qualify?

Companies principally involved in advanced materials and manufacturing systems, agriculture/food/environmental sciences, biotechnology/bioengineering/life sciences, information technology, transportation logistics, or bio-based products.
