About this programme

The Florida Venture Capital Program (FLVCP) is one of three programs run by the Florida Opportunity Fund, whose mission is investing in early-stage companies to advance Florida's innovation economy. FLVCP makes direct equity investments to increase the capital available to small businesses, with emphasis on Florida's targeted industries.

The program was originally capitalized with about $42 million through the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 and the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). The Florida Opportunity Fund's other programs are the Fund of Funds Program, which invests in early-stage venture capital fund managers, and the Clean Energy Investment Program, which funds businesses developing energy-efficient or renewable energy solutions.

Target industries for FLVCP investment are technology and software, life sciences and medical devices, clean energy, spacetech/aerospace/defense, advanced manufacturing and logistics, and other emerging technologies.

How it works

FLVCP makes direct equity investments negotiated per company; the fund does not publish a fixed check size on its resources page.

The fund is one piece of Florida's broader SSBCI 2.0 deployment, which the state reports has produced over $250 million in combined loans and investments since January 2023.

Who can apply

Companies need a Florida connection (a Florida nexus) and should fall within one of the fund's targeted industries: technology and software, life sciences and medical devices, clean energy, spacetech/aerospace/defense, advanced manufacturing and logistics, or other emerging technologies.

The fund considers both startup founders looking for capital and venture capital funds themselves.

How to apply

  1. Schedule a slot at the Florida Opportunity Fund's bi-weekly pitch sessions through its online booking system.
  2. Alternatively, submit an inquiry through the contact form on the Florida Opportunity Fund website, selecting 'Early Stage Investment (FLVCP)' as the program of interest.
  3. The fund states it will respond as soon as possible after a submission.
