About this programme
The Small Business Enhancement Program is run by the City of Cambridge's Community Development Department (CDD), Economic Opportunity and Development Division. It reimburses eligible Cambridge businesses for equipment and materials that help them build a stronger customer base and boost sales.
The program is funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program administered by HUD, so awards are subject to the availability of that federal funding each cycle. It targets retail, food, home-based and creative for-profit businesses operating in Cambridge.
How it works
Grants reimburse the cost of equipment or marketing improvements. Brick-and-mortar businesses can get up to $8,000; home-based or co-working businesses can get up to $2,000 for marketing and software.
Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If an applicant requests changes after receiving their confirmation email, CDD returns the application to the end of the queue, so applicants are encouraged to have all materials prepared as early as possible.
Businesses can reapply for the program every three years.
Who can apply
The business must be a retail, food, home-based, or creative for-profit business, must be viable, and must meet HUD eligibility requirements.
Brick-and-mortar businesses need a commercial lease of one year or more remaining.
Income-eligible micro-enterprises must submit two years of household personal tax returns as part of eligibility.
How to apply
- Part I - Eligibility Confirmation: submit an eligibility form and have an exploration conversation with the program manager, by the Part I deadline of March 15, 2027, 5:00 PM ET.

Frequently asked
How much can my business get from the Small Business Enhancement Program?
Brick-and-mortar businesses can receive up to $8,000 for equipment or marketing; home-based or co-working businesses can receive up to $2,000 for marketing and software.
How does the application process work?
There are two parts: an eligibility confirmation form and conversation with the program manager (Part I), followed by a full grant application with quotes (Part II). Each part has its own deadline.
What happens if I need to change my application after submitting it?
If you request changes after receiving the confirmation email, CDD returns your application to the end of the processing queue, so it pays to have all materials ready before applying.
Can I apply again if I already received this grant?
Yes, businesses can reapply every three years.
Is funding guaranteed every year?
No. Funding is subject to the availability of federal CDBG funding for that cycle.
