About this programme
Business Builds: Life Sciences is a capital grant program run by the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC), formerly known as BioBoost. It supports companies that are creating or expanding their presence in Massachusetts, particularly in biomanufacturing or medtech advanced manufacturing.
The program funds capital investments such as buildout, renovation and equipment needs, while also supporting workforce development and ecosystem collaboration in the life sciences manufacturing sector. Eligible applicants include life sciences companies of any size based in or relocating to Massachusetts, plus nonprofits, community colleges, universities, real estate developers, and municipalities.
How it works
Grants range from $500,000 to $2,000,000 each, with up to ten grants anticipated in this round.
Awards require a 50/50 match: the business must match the grant funds dollar-for-dollar, and neither state grants nor in-kind contributions count toward that match.
Eligible costs are capital expenses only: purchase, construction, or permanent installation of equipment or infrastructure, buildout and fitout, or site preparation and infrastructure such as water, sewer, power, HVAC, or clean energy installations. Operating expenses, salaries, and working capital are not eligible.
Funded projects must be completed by June 30, 2027, and recipients must maintain a location in Massachusetts for no less than 10 years following the depreciation term.
Applicants must demonstrate public benefit, such as job creation, environmental health, economic growth, infrastructure improvements, workforce development, and long-term sustainability.
Who can apply
Life sciences companies of any size, based in or relocating to Massachusetts, as well as nonprofits, community colleges, universities, real estate developers, and municipalities.
Massachusetts-based companies must provide Certificates of Good Standing from the Secretary of the Commonwealth and the Department of Revenue.
