About this programme
Central Texas Angel Network (CTAN) is a nonprofit network of about 140 accredited investors based in Austin. It runs six funding cycles a year for entrepreneurs seeking angel investment, and it says companies it invests in are 9x more likely to provide a profitable return than companies it turns down.
Since it started, CTAN reports investing $142.4 million across 233 companies. It targets Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A deals, with average pre-money valuations of $4.72 million at Pre-Seed/Seed and $11.01 million at Series A.
How it works
CTAN accepts preferred equity, capped convertible notes, and capped post-money SAFEs. It does not accept uncapped convertible notes, pre-money SAFEs, uncapped SAFEs, custom SAFE variations, or KISS securities.
Companies that go through CTAN's due diligence and are invested in get board member guidance through their Series A, syndication with other angel groups, and a benefits package the network values at $850,000 in startup credits for all applicants.
Who can apply
US-based companies are strongly preferred, though a Texas location is not required.
At least one founder needs to work full time on the company; sector experience or a previous exit is preferred. CTAN does not fund single-founder companies, so a minimum of two team members is required.
The company should be at proof-of-concept stage at minimum. Non-life-science companies need demonstrated customer engagement. Life science companies should have an IND, 510(k), or PMA filed, or planned within 6 months.
The company needs at least 3 months of runway, meaning cash on hand of at least 3 times its monthly burn rate, and realistic financial projections built on sourced data, modeled at least 2 years out.
CTAN looks for clear competitive differentiation (it values patents), a scalable business model with room for rapid growth, and an exit strategy that could return 10 times the invested capital.
Real estate development, consulting, franchises, and lifestyle businesses are excluded.
How to apply
- Review CTAN's investment criteria to confirm your company fits before applying.
- Submit the funding application through CTAN's Dealum application portal.
- Go through CTAN's due diligence vetting process.
- If selected, present to CTAN's investor network during one of the six annual funding cycles.
