About this programme
Commonwealth Seed Capital (CSC) is an independent fund that invests in early-stage Kentucky businesses to help commercialize innovative ideas and technologies. It has put $40 million into more than 160 Kentucky businesses over 25 years.
CSC prioritizes five areas: health and human development, information technology and communications, bioscience, environmental and energy technologies, and materials science and advanced manufacturing.
The fund looks for companies with a significant Kentucky presence, prospects for substantial growth, and the potential to generate an appropriate rate of return. Portfolio companies span healthcare, agriculture, technology, aerospace and clean energy.
How it works
CSC positions itself as a bridge for growth-stage companies that are working toward market fit, sitting between early-stage funding and later-stage scaling capital.
Investors take an equity stake but do not take operational control of the company. CSC does require financial statements and other reporting so it can monitor progress, while founders keep day-to-day control.
The fund's board meets monthly to review and assess submissions; approved companies receive funding along with strategic guidance from the CSC team.
